Description

Hey, hey what's this? Could it BE?

Why yes, this is in fact a sketch dump. Albiet, a pretty shoddy sketch dump... But still, it has original work! ORIGINAL WORK GUYS, ISN'T THAT JUST AMAZERING?

*ahem* So uh, this was an idea I've kind of been working on the last few days. However, I've kind of had the concept of it sitting in my head for a while now... but I just hadn't gotten the inspiration for it to motivate me yet. Fortunately though, I got a burst of it when I watched a rendition of Vivaldi's Winter the other day on Youtube. (Thank ye heavens!)

Anyway, I should talk about the concept of these shouldn't? Well, grab a coke and some kernels everybody! I'll try to make this as painless as possible, but I warrant no guarantees.

So uhm, you all know how you can make shadow puppets out of hand gestures from candlelight, right everybody? Well, just think if you could control those shadows too! That's what the ability the people in the tippy top part of the image dump have (the ones with the silly hats). They can control and manipulate spirits from the light of their candlelight. Bind them as well. Isn't that just neat-o?

In order understand their powers you sort of kind of have to understand their belief system too... I'm still sort of in the WIP stage when it comes to their mythology, but I assure you it's raunchy and outrageous just like every other myth story out there. I'll give you a brief overview of it though.

-So basically, the Candle folks religion is based around these two very prominent, very powerful, god and goddess. (They have other ones of course, including a Ferry man that works sort of like Hades and a Goddess of festivity and mischief but I wont go there ATM.) These two deities represent the Candle folks season, which is a season of dark and a season of light. The Candle folk, as you guessed it, live in a very cold territory, at the very top of there continent, so they only get 4-6 months of sunlight a year. So in order for them to make sense of this transition in season they put a myth behind it (much like how our ancestors did). This myth of course leads to how they live and do things. Which of pretty much revolves around candlelight and wax, to put it bluntly.

The people on the bottom however, are much different from them. These people, they wear masks to show their power/status at all times. Not only that, but you are born into the caste system you are born in and you have to stay there. (Which contradicts the Candle folk and their belief that it is the experience gained that earns your status.)

Not only do the people of Masks have a different way of life from them, and a different belief system entirely but they also do not believe in magic like they do. The Mask folk; they believe in alchemy, and such tales of Goddess' beaming light or tree demons incased in candle wax will not move them.

This brings us to the conflict of my story... The Candle folk, they live in a region cut off from the rest of the Masks by an ENORMOUS mountain and a tremendous mountain range. However, things are about to change once the masks start mining the mountain for ores and minerals for their alchemy. Buh buh buhm

Anyway, moving onward. To the protagonist of the story! You see that young girl with the silly hat mid sketch dump a little to the right? That's her! Her name is Lestlah, she is a mischievous little girl, and her big sister often has to scorn her. It's even been poked fun at her that she is the Festival Goddess incarnate with the way she acts. It's all in good fun though, the Candle folk are actaully very lax despite their somewhat prudish lifestyle. (How couldn't they, what with the silly hats they wear?)

Soooo... moving onward, yeah! You see that tree monster at the near bottom there? Remember how I said the Candle folk can bind spirits to candle wax too? Well that's what happened to him. Normally, his kind would take residence in a tree or something, to wait until wary travelers came by so they can shish kabob them. In his case though, he seems to have gotten himself caught and bound in a candle of wax. So now he has to take orders from the wielder of said candle; in this case Lestlah.

...-This isn't to say he isn't without power though. The spirits from the shadow realm are notorious for their persuasive tendencies and all around mental manipulation. He'll try to get Lestlah to free him from his bind every chance he gets by persuading her to break the candlestick.

Fortunately for Lestlah, she's just as devilish and cunning as him. So she see's through every charade he plays. Haha, sucks for you treedork!

Anyway, last but not least, the people of silk. These people live in a far off land connected to the land of people who wear masks but separated by a treacherous desert that's notorious for its killer sand worms... This isn't to say they are completely cut off, oh no. The two of them have been known to trade with one another VIA boat transportation. They've been doing this for quiet a while now, and things had been relatively peaceful for them... That is until the masks had a massive boost in alchemy and engineering one year and decided to invade them with massive war ships. The silk folk didn't stand a lick of a chance against them with their puny boats. Not only that, but they had no means of and offense when they could only use their silk as defensive magic and all of their military training was land based. (Besides, the people of silk are kind of non-aggressive to begin with... so they kind of wanted to avoid all physical conflict as much as possible)

So the people of silk were conquered, and colonized. They have to wear masks just as their rulers do, and magic has been completely prohibited... This, of course, isn't exactly the case. There are still an abundance of people still practicing magic (secretly) in the land of silk. Not only that but they've taken a learning to alchemy as well, so now they have a combination of both to work with. This makes it much easier for the rebels of the land if silk to come up with an idea to topple the empire they are under rule!

The best thing about the people of Silk though, is not their magic (which works similarly to Candle folks FYI) but is their knowledge of breeding and domesticating giant... bizarre monstrosities, as the masks like to call them. You know those worms in the desert that I mentioned previously? Well, those aren't really worms, they're moth larvae. And those moth larvae can range from about dog-sized to about FRICKEN' MOTHRA VERSUS GODZILLA SIZED. They also have a bunch of other equally bizarre creatures in their country, but I don't feel like describing them all and I'm still kind of in the concept stage of it, so... blarg.

So yeah, this is just an overview of what I had in mind for this story/universe thing. I still have plenty of things iron out and improve upon, don't get me wrong. However, I still kind of like where this is going so far...

Anyway, it's time for my bed guy's. Thank you all for viewing/reading if you did.
